Volume 12 Number 6 1984 November Any student of Canadian history is familiar with the names of James Wolfe and the Marquis de Montcalm. Sieges of Quebec takes these characters and gives them life. Although the more than twenty titles in the series deal with different periods in Canadian history, this particular one concentrates on the struggle for control of New France by the British and the French. Desmond Morton, professor of history at the University of Toronto, provides the reader with the background of the conflict, beginning with Champlain's landing in 1608 and the inherited feud with the Iroquois. From there the reader is taken through the rule of Louis XIV and XV, culminating in the surrender of Vaudreuil in 1760. However, this is not just an historical account but a realistic look at the superiority of Wolfe, the ambition of Montcalm, and the greed of Vaudreuil. The story is put together so that the reader is able to see what is happening in both camps and with both leaders, at the same time. Liberally scattered with pictures and maps and with discussion questions, this would be a good read for any student. Also included are selected biographies of other outstanding people of that time, a useful glossary, and bibliography. Desmond Morton is not only the author of several titles in the series, he is also the series consultant. A recommended purchase for both school and public libraries.
