Pope John Paul II's forthcoming visit to Canada will undoubtedly be an event of national significance. Elizabeth Fisher, a teacher-librarian in the separate schools, has masterfully integrated the visit with the social studies curriculum. Her book is informative, interesting, well-written, and especially useful for the classroom. The text highlights each stop on the Pope's itinerary, outlining each region's history, its national significance, its tourist attractions and important demographic information complete with black-and-white drawings and photographs. Activities are suggested that coincide with each city and topic. These activities are varied and meaningful and include map skills, arts and crafts, and cooking, as well as many language arts activities. While some will only be pertinent if used before the Pope's September 1984 arrival, many other activities can be used during and after the Canadian tour.

Readers are supplied with a lot of background information about the Pope and the Papacy, yet this does not make the book parochial or limited to a Catholic audience. The Pope in Canada can be useful in all schools for its social studies and language arts curriculum content and be-cause after all, the Pope is an international figure.

My only reservations are that the focal point is too timely and the book has become available too late. As the Pope's Canadian tour ends, in some ways so does the usefulness and appeal of the book. However, it can serve as a good historical record and as such could always justify a place on library shelves.
