Brian McFarlane, the well-known host and commentator on television's Hockey Night in Canada, has written another enjoyable book, Brian McFarlane's NHL Hockey. As he writes in his introduction, he hopes that "this book will appeal to fans of hockey everywhere—whether you play in a league, scrimmage with the gang in an empty parking lot every Sunday, or just love to watch the likes of Bossy or Dionne move on the ice. We share a love for a game that has fascinated North America for over a hundred years."

His skilful combination of team, player, and official profiles, coach's comments, hockey trivia questions, and explanation of rules in a simple, readable style achieves his purpose as outlined in his introductory chapter. One other essential ingredient that McFarlane adds to all his books is his great love for hockey. His love and enthusiasm for Canada's national game transforms this work beyond a book compiled of statistics, records, and lists.

This would be an excellent addition to public or high school collections or to the private collections of hockey buffs.
