Volume 12 Number 6 1984 November James Houston's book, Frozen Fire not only tells an exciting story of two teenage boys struggling for survival in the Canadian Arctic, it also sheds an insight into the lives, beliefs, and customs of the Eskimo people. Mathew and Kayak decided to go looking for Mathew's father whose helicopter was lost in a blizzard. They encountered many setbacks and hardships and had to rely on Kayak's knowledge of Eskimo know-how and their friendship in order to survive. It is in the course of the story that Houston helps the reader to understand the Eskimo way of life and thinking. He puts in bits of Eskimo folklore and some explanations on the way they live at appropriate places throughout the book, but not so that it is intrusive to the smooth flowing of the story. l found this to be a very interesting and exciting book that should be popular with young readers.
