Curriculum developers across Canada have been exhorted to include more Canadian content in the social studies. A parallel development has seen an increase in the flow of Canadian textbooks and supporting material. Telford's book explores a particularly interesting topic in Canadian history in considerable detail. The topic is of continuing importance, and the materials included in this scrap-book extend from the American Revolution to the 1980s.

There is a surprising number of individual entries that cover the wide spectrum of matters in which Canadian-American relations play a part. In some instances, these relations were under considerable strain; in others, the impact is more covert. The compiler of the material has accorded equal importance to such obvious events as the War of 1812 and less apparent matters as the impact of international labour unions. Telford wisely refrains from including a commentary on the topics and materials, allowing the individual items to speak for themselves.

The format creates a number of potential problems. The large size, 14 x 11 inches, and the relative fragility of a paperback, make shelving in a library difficult. On the other hand, use in a classroom would appear to be enhanced by the striking appearance and size. The contents of the scrapbook are exemplary, with little left out that could arguably have been included. A list of contents eliminates the need for an index, while a bibliography and a time line are valuable features. This is really an excellent portrayal of a most important facet of Canadian history.
