Volume 12 Number 6 1984 November This volume brings ECW Press's editors halfway to completion of their planned ten-volume set of bibliographies that critics have applauded for their high quality and general usefulness to all involved in the studying, teaching, and editing of Canadian literature. It covers five of the best-known and most assured of Canadian writers of prose fiction of the twentieth century: Morley Callaghan, Mavis Gallant, Hugh Hood, Alice Munro, and Ethel Wilson. The largest space, naturally, is taken up by Callaghan, who has been publishing since 1925; Hugh Hood, whose work begins to appear in the late fifties, bulks surprisingly large in second place; the three women writers, excellent as they are, have simply not produced as much or have evidently not attracted as much attention. The accumulation of publishing information is as impressive as in earlier volumes and includes translations into foreign languages; the annotations of reviews and critical studies are, in the first place, invaluable as aids in study and research for students at high school or university, and secondly, provide glimpses of the cultural history of Canada over the past few decades. (This is particularly true of the long career of Callaghan.) The pleasurable quality of these volumes to the hand (and in design, layout and typeface) has been commented on in earlier reviews.
