If you have ever wondered why the Canadian Rockies and Banff in particular have become such well-known tourist meccas, this book will provide some of the answers. Hart has delved into another aspect of the history of the CPR: how it developed and promoted Canadian tourism in order to establish a profitable passenger train line. His survey of the CPR efforts from the mid 1880s to the 1920s provides a fascinating insight into the development of the luxurious tourist accommodations in the Canadian Rockies. However, the most interesting part of the book is the abundance of well-reproduced illustrations, which were drawn from various archival sources. Particularly good are the colour reproductions of a wide variety of posters that were used to promote tourism at the time. The subject is only of peripheral interest to high school history students. However, if there is a demand in your library for illustrative material of the time, this is a good source, especially for posters. Otherwise, this book will be of interest mainly to devout western Canadian history buffs interested in the CPR and the aura of the Canadian Rockies.
