CONNECTIONS TWO: WRITERS & THE LAND
Winnipeg, MB: Manitoba School Library Audio Visual Association, 1983.
Volume 12 Number 4
Connections: Writers and the Land was published in 1974 by the Manitoba Library Audio Visual Association to give biographical information on twenty-eight Manitoba writers who had published since 1920. Now we get Connections Two, a continuation of this work, dealing with works published from 1970 onwards and containing two new categories, cartoonists and musicians, but leaving out non-fiction writers. The book is an attempt to recognize men and women of Manitoba who attempt through their works to reflect and interpret the land and its influence on Manitobans. The fifty-seven interviews are largely informal biographies, with the exception of Margaret Laurence's; for her we get what the subtitle under her entry calls "More of Her Work Than Her Life". The contributors include librarians, students, writers, teachers and other volunteers. There's a lot of information about hobbies and summer cottages. This book will probably go out of date as quickly as Volume I, but for the time being it is useful for Manitobans and others interested in that province's writers.Warner Winter, Emery C.I., Weston, ON. |
