The Book of Canadians is indeed that. Hundreds of biographical sketches, each with either a photograph, usually black and white, or an artist's sketch, provide information on a great variety of Canadians. Entries are alphabetical, with a detailed index at the back of the book. Each entry contains birth and death date, if known, and a brief outline of achievements. The index provides additional information in the form of honours and titles. Entries cover all aspects of Canadian life: the arts, sports, history, science, any area one can conceive.

The author has included a full page of acknowledgements, which indicate the extent of her careful research. All photographs are credited. There are two pages of instructions/explanations at the front of the book, which I recommend be read before using the book. In this section, the author outlines the use of an asterisk in the entries as a cross-reference to related articles, points out that some of the names in the index do not have their own entries but are mentioned in relation to other names, and lists a few further biographical references that she feels particularly worthy of further reading.

The book is also carefully designed. Print is large and easy to read. Although there are usually three entries per page, they are clearly outlined and separated so there can be no confusion as to what text refers to which name. Inner margins are large enough that rebinding would not destroy any information. Highly recommended for all Canadian libraries.
