Whenever a person is teaching any course, there is a need for a comprehensive outline of what should be taught. This can come in the form of a provincial curriculum guide or as a well-thought out commercial text. This is the latter. It is good, but what does it give to a teacher of an ESL class with the myriad of problems that can and do arise? This series of books gives a comprehensive English course designed to be taught and used. It is systematically laid out with the study of English grammar and structures writing and reading process and a test at the end of each unit all with an emphasis on Canada and Canadian English. In addition to the individual units, there are suggestions for presentation of the materials and ideas for games that can be used when teaching ESL. This is definitely not a set of texts that can be used effectively without a teacher. The drills and the other materials must be presented to be used properly and added to depending on the specific students. This program, written by teachers, is excellent. The teacher's handbooks, the workbooks, and the ideas demand use in an area that can definitely stand more usable materials. Arne Handley, Alexandra J. H. S., Medicine Hat, AB. |
