Volume 12 Number 3 1984 May In her mid-thirties, Lorna Crozier is well established in the field of Canadian poetry; an active participant in Saskatchewan writers' projects, she has published four previous books under the name Lorna Uher. Some of the poems in The Weather have been broadcast on CBC and published in periodicals such as Saturday Night and Fiddlehead. In the collection, largely short lyrics, the two long poems are prominent. "The Foetus Dreams" seems contrived, especially in comparison with the very brief and poignant "Stillborn." Much more successful is "The First Woman," a spare and striking evocation of the life of a Quebecoise who followed her trapper husband to the West in the early 1800s. In the shorter poems, Crozier's keen ear for everyday speech often brings the grin and nod of recognition: "So unexpected, say my mother and my aunt/nibbling date squares/left over from the funerals/Why, I saw him only yesterday/It just goes to show you." Librarians might also like to recommend "The Child Who Walks Backwards" to teachers who are dealing with child abuse as a class topic.
