VANCOUVER
North Vancouver, Whitecap Books, c1982.
Volume 12 Number 3
This is a collection of colour photographs showing Vancouver at its scenic best. From English Bay at sunset to Granville Market and Gastown, we are given a tourist's-eye view of the city and such surrounding splendours as Lynn Valley Canyon and Grouse Mountain. With the new stadium prominent in several instances, the pictures are up-to-date, except for one showing the old court-house still in the process of being renovated to house the Vancouver Art Gallery, a project that was completed in October, 1983. There is virtually no text, yet there are several errors in the brief captions. For example, the City and District of North Vancouver are not included in the list of municipalities comprising Greater Vancouver, and little Mountain should have been capitalized. This book, while attractive enough, is not particularly original or interesting, in either the composition of the photographs or the scenes chosen. For curricular purposes, a volume showing several different sides of life in Vancouver would be preferable. In this book, which incidentally lacks an index, there are only two pages depicting industrial scenes and one shot of a restaurant employee working. Suitable for leisure use.
