This valuable little booklet emphasizes working better, not harder or longer. It starts by stating that studying is a skill that has specific components that can be learned and improved through practice. The study-skills techniques are presented as an integrated system. The components of this system are: techniques for concentration and time-scheduling that set the stage for study; procedures for listening, note taking, and reading that are the real tools of study; and strategies for exam-writing and paper writing that demonstrate your learning.

There is a chapter for each of the following topics: concentration, time-scheduling, listening and lecture note taking, reading and learning from textbooks, preparing for and writing exams, writing papers, and memory and the learning process. There are examples of a time diary, an assessment of time use, a weekly time schedule, and note taking included in the appendices.

This very thorough treatment leads me to say that I think this little booklet should be required reading for every person entering academic post-secondary education. Every school and library should have at least one copy for serious students to read and learn from.
