Colombo's superior editing skill is again evident in this comprehensive collection of rythmic songs and chants of our native Indian people. Most are translated into English as poems although originally they were probably accompanied by drum beating or dancing as integral to the rituals and ceremonies. Colombo has chosen to follow linguistic families in Volume 1, Beothukan, Algonkian, Iroquoian, Athapascan, Siouan, and Kootenayan; Volume 2 follows tribal lines, Salishan, Waka-shan, Tsimshian, Haidan, Koluschan, and Chinookan.

While some of the songs, which vary greatly in length, celebrate nature and personal relationships, others deal with rituals such as the naming ceremony, initiation rites, burial, and war and battles. There are about four hundred poems in all.

In his introduction, Colombo briefly outlines the theories of origins of Canada's native population, their linguistic groups, and something of the history of collecting their lore and literature. Each volume ends with complete notes, and Volume II has as well a lengthy bibliography, discography, and filmography adding to its usefulness to the librarian and the student interested in further research.

Morrisseau paintings add to the cover appeal of these well-bound books, printed on quality stock. They are recommended for use in a Canadian literature unit on Indian poetry, a dramatic arts ritual unit, native studies, and for personal enjoyment.
