Many interesting details are presented included Brulé's discovery of Toronto's site, Elizabeth Simcoe's impressions, the first parliament building, the founding of the St. Larwence Market, early roads such as Danforth, Dundas, and Yonge, social life, homes, and recreation, the city during the War of 1812, the burning of the legislative buildings, Toronto's first industries, early homes, civic organization, William Lyon Mackenzie and the 1837 Rebellion, and the development of links with other centres.

The variety in types of presentation is refreshing and appealing: early maps, Jeffery's drawings, photos, survey sketches, newspaper clippings, posters, and paintings plus a variety in framing styles. Appropriate background music sets the period.
