Prudential has sponsored the development of this book, which is terrific for browsing. The book had its genesis when the editor and an old colleague, now working for Prudential Insurance Company of America, met during a flight. The latter person expressed his belief that Canadians spend too much time running down themselves and their country. The idea of publishing a book to show the other side of the country and its inhabitants grew from that point.

The original idea was to include only people who had won some kind of award but eventually it was agreed to add persons who had never been officially recognized but who have some notable achievement to their credit.

Winners in athletics, humanities, sciences, communication, transportation, commerce, and the arts are all found listed here. The emphasis is very much on the contemporary, which gives current relevance but which may date the book very quickly. In many cases only the 1982 and 1983 winners of any given award are listed, although there are exceptions. For instance, there is a list of writers who have received two or more Governor-General's Awards that goes back to 1953. Interspersed with the current listings are brief snippets about firsts.

This is not a reference book, as most lists are for one or two years only. As well, the chapter headings cover very broad areas, and there is not an index. However, it should be very popular for sampling, as it contains a great deal of interesting information, trivial and otherwise.
