Jack and Wyn Martin, who have extensive educational background in psychology, work in the education and services sectors. Their book, Personal Development: Self-Instruction for Personal Agency, following over thirty articles arid four books in the areas of instructional science and counselling, describes clearly "a systematic process of self-instruction that can be used to gain greater control and power over life circumstances and situations." Strategies are outlined that "you can use to teach yourself the skills, thinking patterns, and emotional responses that will allow you to exert this influence" on "your life and what you do with it."

It successfully appeals to both scholar and lay reader, as each theory component is vitalized by the case studies of Anita, Theresa, and Gerald; following them through the "model for self-instruction" (deciding, gathering information, taking stock, getting specific, planning, acting, and evaluating) makes it easy to apply the model to oneself. The detailed explanations for each step make it more informative than many self-instruction books that focus mainly on desired outcome rather than process.

This book has easily-read print, a contents page, chapter-by-chapter bibliography, and a layout with headings and sub-titles to facilitate use. It could meet curricular needs of the senior student learning about problem solving, decision making, and responsibility for self; as well, it could be used for personal needs in the stated areas.
