HOMESTEAD ON THE RANGE
Wilfrid Eggleston.
Ottawa, Borealis Press, c1982.
Volume 12 Number 3
Tracing the history of his family as they move from England to homestead in southwestern Alberta in 1910, this book uses personal memories, family letters, newspaper clippings, and local histories to reconstruct the fifteen years the Eggleston family struggled to farm in the Palliser Triangle. Wilfrid Eggleston (1901- ?) has written scores of magazine and newspaper articles and several books, including High Plains (Borealis, 1975), Prairie Symphony (Borealis, 1978), and Literary Friends (Borealis, 1980). Homestead on the Range is loosely structured, containing the adult author's editorial comments on his boyhood experiences ("sometimes in later years, I would speculate. . ."), slang expressions, ("queered," "go it alone," "turfed out") as well as a number of sections that would be of most interest to other original homesteaders familiar with the area and individuals mentioned.
