John G. Packer, member of the department of botany at the University of Alberta is the author of the revised edition of Flora of Alberta. The first edition was published in 1959 by E.H. Moss (1892-1963), then professor of botany at the University of Alberta. A supplement prepared by J.G. Packer was added to the first edition in 1974.

The revised edition retains the format of the first, providing an inventory of 1775 known vascular plant species that are native to or have become established in Alberta. All are grouped according to genus and family, with descriptions of species, genera and, families included. It also includes 1158 provincial distribution maps that were not part of the 1959 edition.

A list of geographical abbreviations, a glossary, and an index, which includes familiar names as well as scientific ones, help make the information more accessible to a lay person or a beginning botanist. However, the technical nature of the contents renders it of most value to students and specialists in the field of botany.
