THE FLARE OF A MATCH
Jim Young.
St. John's, Breakwater Books, c1981.
Volume 12 Number 3
Simple plot. Young American draft dodger becomes enamoured of the "great white north" and the simple unaffected life of the people there. Promised bliss turns to inexplicable tragedy. Shallow characters. The entire book is an extended anecdotal account of a personal experience of the author, who is himself the best-developed character. Clumsily written. With occasional exceptions, the whole manuscript reads like a first draft. And the New Zealand-born author has difficulty keeping Anglicisms out of rural eastern Canadian dialect. Result? Mediocre book. Roy Babstock, Glenwood P. S., Glendswood, NF. |
