It is always to be hoped that a local history will embody the same standards of research, scholarship, and writing skills as the best of broader historical works, but such is not always the case. Fortunately, Joan Magee writes as well as she researches, and the result is interesting reading.

The history of the Dutch (and Pennsylvania Dutch) in Essex County goes back at least as far as the American Revolution when loyalists came to the area. In the nineteenth century, some Dutch people came here directly from Europe. The majority made only a brief stop on their way to Holland, Grand Rapids, and other parts of Michigan.

Between 1900 and 1939, seasonal agricultural workers came to Kent and Essex counties every year but most returned to the Netherlands for the winter.

Only after World War II was there a major influx of permanent settlers from Holland. Now it was necessary to establish a support system for the new Canadians and the immigrants themselves strove to adapt to Canada while maintaining relations with their native land.

The book concludes with the results of a seventy-two item questionnaire administered to persons of Dutch origin now living in the Windsor region. There is a good deal of material here that would be of interest to students studying ethnic groups in Canada and their adaptation and attitudes.

All in all, this is a very well-done book with the post-World War II section being the most interesting and important part. The book will be most relevant in the Windsor-Essex County region but will also be useful in a broader perspective where the school has a large budget and collection.
