A new genre is born: the Canadian Icelandic short story. These are not stories as we know stories; each tells a single event, occasionally seen through the eyes of a child with a child's incomplete vision.

Gunnar has "found" the events in letters, diaries, essays and poems and has translated them for other Canadians as well as her own people. Several of the events are told hesitantly with the bearer's attempt to put the story by, while he or she gathers strength to continue. These asides are often as telling as the story itself, but they break the flow and, in doing so, add poignancy. A redoubtable achievement. For senior students and adult readers.
