Volume 12 Number 2 1984 March Written by Tim Wynne-Jones, author of Odd's Ends ¹ (winner of the Seal Book Award) and The Knot ² (runner-up in the Toronto City Book Awards), this is a picture book fantasy. Ken Nutt, professor at Waterloo University and teacher in the Stratford Gallery's programs for children, using the technique of pencil drawings for which he is most noted, has found just the right approach to enhance the feeling of the story. In true picture book fashion, the illustrations complement the words adding to the emotion and to the details of the action. While the story is slight, it is satisfying. For the child who likes to day-dream of far-off adventures but needs to experience that glow of returning home safely at the conclusion, this story will act as encouragement. Zoom, obviously a homebody, someone's pet kitten, loved water, not to drink but to play in. When he finds the map to the sea, of course he must go. He finds the sea in a house with a big front door. The very imaginative sequences that follow will stimulate children's imagination and lead them to find all sorts of possibilities in their own day-dreams. The text flows beautifully and works extremely well when read aloud. Recommended for both school and public libraries.
