Charles Lynch, a veteran journalist, has been a foreign and a war correspondent, but he is best known as a veteran Ottawa political analyst.

His memoirs provide light, enjoyable general-interest reading for adults and would be a suitable purchase for public libraries.

Unfortunately, this book could have been much more, given the author's experience. But Lynch has chosen for the most part to focus on the trivial and seldom do his views of people and events extend beyond the superficial.

Only in his treatment of Diefenbaker and Pearson, both of whom he knew personally for many years, does Lynch even begin to provide some new insights into our recent political history.

As he says, the book is "chiefly" about himself, yet we learn so little about the man that we find it very difficult to understand some of his professional decisions, such as his revealing of Governor-General Georges Vanier's personal feelings about the monarchy, gleaned from comments made during a social visit to Rideau Hall, at which Lynch was merely accompanying a friend.

Not recommended for secondary school libraries. Second priority purchase for smaller colleges and universities.
