Volume 12 Number 2 1984 March Pluck starts slowly, but gradually gains momentum as the complicated events overwhelm the lives of five friends and their families—from their days as classmates at Cambridge before World War II until the final dramatic denouement in a hotel room in Mexico City almost forty years later. The basic theme of this novel is the solidarity of the group, with the charismatic John Pluck as the main focus. Group loyalty persists even in the face of murder. "It was a group effort. The group did things that the individual, on his own responsibility, would have balked at." Most students would find Pluck hard-going, but adults and mature senior students will discover a well-crafted novel, crammed with complex, interesting characters. Jonathan Webb is co-winner of the 1983 Seal $50,000 First Novel Award for Pluck. Recommended with reservations for senior secondary school and community college libraries.
