Beset by a series of bad dreams featuring ghosts, hairy monsters, and other scary beings, the dreamers share their secrets of how to make nightmares go away. There are several tricks, all charmingly illustrated. After each nightmare is described, there is the refrain, which youngsters soon learn to chant: "Don't worry. All you have to do is . . .," and then the reader turns the page to learn how to stand up to nightmare creatures, whether turning bugs into stars or making friends with a troll.

This light touch is a healthy way to approach what can be a real problem for children (and their parents!). The children who are dreaming change from page to page. Thus, they represent both sexes and several nationalities, thereby underlining the universality of the nightmare experience. The last page recaps the bad dreams and offers the ultimate solution: grabbing something cuddly and jumping into bed with another family member.

The illustrations are colourful, and most of them spill across both pages. They also have a whimsical quality that reflects the text. There is a new illustration for each dream and solution, making this a good choice to read aloud to a group of youngsters. Recommended for grades K to 3 and for any child who has ever been afraid of things that go bump in the night.
