In the 1970s, four multi-million dollar waste disposal companies absorbed hundreds of small firms across Canada and the United States. Shoddy dumping practices, charges of price fixing, bid-rigging, and connections to organized crime has fuelled the controversy over these "agglomerates." Harold Crooks profiles the major companies involved and gives detailed reports of the competition and havoc that has resulted when such firms have dominated waste disposal services in major cities such as Winnipeg, Toronto, and Montreal. This well-researched book presents facts and figures as to which companies are operating and where in Canada. It includes material based on interviews with employees and owners of small, family-run businesses, as well as photos of some of the more prominent people in the industry. The appendixes and notes for further reading, which are set out by theme, would be useful to students doing research in the fields of economics or environmental studies. This expose does a good job of raising questions about private enterprise and the public interest. Its lively writing style brings information to the reader in an enjoyable book. Recommended for community college, university, and public libraries.
