Volume 12 Number 2 1984 March A floppy sheepdog with a taste for junkfood is the central character of this lightweight story. Sam (Samantha) the dog, has unwillingly accompanied her owners on a move to the suburbs. There she befriends Jennie and Beth, two believable ten-year-old girls. Sam's slangy mental commentary provides an amusing contrast to the interpretations of her owner and friends. Soon Jennie finds that she can tune in on Sam's thoughts, and the trio set out to solve the mystery of the neighbourhood recluse. The somewhat trite plot is lifted above the ordinary by a well-drawn contemporary setting and the counterpoint of Sam's commentary. The story moves quickly, with plenty of dialogue and action. Characterizations are simple, but the families are believably drawn. The book is not illustrated, except for a colourful cover. Print is large and easy to read. However, a printing error has resulted in a repeat of more than two pages in the text. With its Dracula tie-in, this book will undoubtedly be popular with the insatiable mystery readers of this age group. Esther Hutchison, Rocky Mountain House, AB.
