This large format book has two main elements. The first is a broad selection of writings about British Columbia. This selection includes pieces taken from many points in time and from both prose and poetry. The selection has no apparent weaknesses and its strengths include much fine poetry and many interesting articles illuminating sometimes neglected features of the history of British Columbia. The second element is the photography. There are almost eighty photographs, and they are dazzling. The natural magnificence of the scenery is wonderfully captured, while the human artifacts are shown to have their own particular beauty. The introduction by George Woodcock provides an outline of what the reader can expect and should look for in the book.

In a book of this kind, it is necessary to sacrifice depth in order to cover the variety of content necessary; nevertheless, there remain many insights into aspects of the province that will excite the reader's interest. The feature that distinguishes this book from others such as Liz Bryan's British Columbia: This Favoured Land (Douglas & McIntyre, 1982) is the selection of literature included. The writings are very fine, and the assurance of re-reading the familiar is countered by the pleasure of encountering material for the first time and finding it to be of equally good quality. This compilation represents an excellent introduction to the literature of British Columbia.
