Volume 12 Number 1 1984 January A sleeper-clad toddler hears a variety of sounds: "woosh," "scratch," "pitter pat," "scrunch," "clunk," and "ssppss." He guesses what might be making the sound and then investigates. The "woosh" is not the birds and bees having a party, rather Mummy drying her hair. The sounds do not always accurately represent what the child thinks they might be or what they turn out to be. Would ten rabbits munching carrots sound the same as paper being crunched? An average text that challenges children to think about sounds is greatly enhanced by the illustrations and their organization. Suspense is created when the question is asked on the right hand page and the answer is only discovered after turning the page. This device delights children and gives them an opportunity to participate in the story with their own guesses. The illustrations are soft pencil sketches sometimes having only red to accent the spacious black and white of the pages or a whole range of colours brightening birds, bees, blocks, and baby. The large primary school print qualifies this story for beginning readers. Although the sturdy glossy cover and good quality paper of the paperback edition are only stapled together, they appear capable of withstanding some wear.
