Volume 12 Number 1 1984 January Frederick H. Wooding, naturalist and author of the critically acclaimed Book of Canadian Fishes (McGraw, 1973), has achieved an equally high standard with his latest work, Wild Mammals of Canada. Written in order to give the general reader insight into the lives of these animals, and to make their struggle for survival better known, Wild Mammals succeeds admirably in its task. While many readers will want to peruse this book cover to cover, the careful sectioning and layout of the text and the very complete index make Wild Mammals an excellent reference tool. Each animal is described in close detail, with interesting historical facts, legends and anecdotes included as well. Part of the appeal of Wild Mammals lies in the fact that it is authoritative and informative without condescension. When an unfamiliar biological term is used, its meaning is clearly explained in the text. Metric and imperial measurements are both given. Wild Mammals is generously illustrated with pictures by leading wildlife photographers, many in colour. These are located directly adjacent to the relevant text, together with sketches by Peter Karsten and drawings of tracks by Karen F. Wooding. The final section of the book is devoted to a short but valuable practical guide to mammal watching by Dr. David R. Gray of the National Museum of Natural Sciences. Physically, Wild Mammals is durable and extremely attractive, opening flat to display clear type on dense, low-gloss paper.
