Volume 12 Number 1 1984 January In Tree of Life, Mosaic Press and the Canadian Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations have co-published an impressively illustrated selection of poems and epigrams translated by Wotjek Stelmaszynski from the works of Polish immigrant George Korey-Krzeczowski. The book is intended as the first of a series of translations from the works of Canadian authors who compose chiefly in a language other than English or French. George Korey was active in the Polish resistance movement during World War II. He served for several years in the Polish diplomatic service before coming to Canada in 1951 to pursue a successful career in management counselling. He has served in senior administrative posts at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, has been active in establishing a United Nations University, and has chaired on the Ontario Advisory Council on Multiculturalism. He is now President of the Canadian School of Management and of Northland Open University. The poems include some low-key lyrics on the beauty of nature and some gently sketched descriptions of a number of exotic cities. A short selection of poems on the Nazi occupation and two recent works on the current troubles in Poland praise the enduring spirit of the Polish people and confirm that "when you think/that all is lost/remember/the future still lies before us." Illustrations from the Korey family album, photographs by Andrew Korey, and imaginative designs by Stanislaw Piaskowski are well organized to support the central motifs of the volume: domestic life, travel, the rubble of war, the tree as symbol of regenerative growth.
