Volume 12 Number 1 1984 January From their overland trek in 1874 through to the turn of the century, the North West Mounted Police quickly and without bloodshed established themselves as the law force of Western Canada (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba). Well-documented from national and provincial archives, with many black-and-white photographs, these two volumes present a detailed history of this early police force. The first chapter of the first volume describes the events leading to the establishment of the force and the difficulties encountered in getting the men west from Ontario. The remaining chapters of both books detail individual cases in rough chronological order. Characters, both Indian and white, from other historical sources are shown within the context of the police force history, e.g., Jerry Potts, Louis Kiel, Chief Crowfoot, Sitting Bull, and General Custer. Each of the four western provinces is aptly represented with many of the stories new to most readers. Did you know there was once a stage coach robbery on the trail between Edmonton and Calgary? Events are presented within the physical boundaries of the time with just enough reference points and maps in order to accurately fix them on today's locations. The information contained in these volumes could be invaluable for historical research in schools or personal interest. Unfortunately, there is no index to allow access to the person, event, or locale required. The many photographs and maps, as well as descriptive chapter headings compensate somewhat. A few of the photographs are distorted when they run across the two pages and the middle is lost. This will become serious should re-binding ever be needed. Overall, these are two books that should be part of school and public libraries in western Canada to satisfy research needs and to prove to children that our local history is as exciting as that we see on American television.
