This small volume is a how-to manual with a different twist. Although subtitled, "A Guide to Creative Writing," it is really more about taking "inner journeys" in preparation for creative writing than about the writing act itself.

Peter Baltensperger, who received a Hilroy Fellowship Award for innovative teaching, views creative writing as

...a kind of self-expression, where the subconscious' dreams,
fears and desires are brought into consciousness and are transformed
into the concrete written word, [thus it] is a fantasy in which
students externalize increasingly deeper levels of themselves.

Following an introduction that provides a rationale for the exercises to come, are five short chapters with careful and clear instructions on helping students go on "inner journeys." The titles of these chapters give a flavour of their contents: "Relaxation," "Opening Up," "Corridors of the Mind," "Into the Depths," and "Follow-Up."

For writing instructors with an interest in fostering writing as a deeply personal transaction and with a suitably soothing voice, this booklet may provide insights into the use of suggestion as an aid to creating personal images that may trigger such writing.
