Volume 12 Number 1 1984 January Fourteen-year-old Trish dreams of being a veterinarian. She also dreams of having an Indian pony like Flying Cloud, the famous paint that Chief Running Bear rode in the movie, Ambush at Painted Rock. Well, dreams do come true (in this book, at least), and the scrawny nag that Trish's father finds abandoned on a deserted neighbouring ranch is doctored back to a healthful state of uncanny resemblance to the famous Flying Cloud. The plot is complicated by the fateful appearances of the deluded old man who had neglected the horse, a new family who take over the deserted ranch and try to claim the horse for their teenage son, and a mysterious cowboy at a rodeo who tries to claim the horse for somebody named Luke. For added measure, the author has also thrown in a killer blizzard, a near-disastrous heart attack in the cockpit of a small plane, and an amazing win by Trish over a champion barrel racer. What more could you want in a fifty-page book? Well, since more is not always better, some suggestions might include a tighter, less fanciful plot, fewer cardboard characters, and a more realistic interpretation of native Indian culture.
