Volume 12 Number 1 1984 January The Haunted Land delivers ten tales from all across this land; most of them are modern ghost stories but one goes back over three hundred years. I recognize the terrain of some of the stories and can vouch for authenticity on that head. What intrigues me still is the authenticity of the ghostly appearances. Clery claims that his role has been that of collector; that these stories are believed by those who told the stories to him. They are good stories, whatever else, and Clery has captured the essence of place so well as to make one a believer. The oldest story comes from la belle province and is perhaps the scariest. Two truly horrifying tales come, one each from Bienfait, Saskatchewan, and from the ice pans of a Newfoundland seal hunt. The Cape Breton story is exactly as my dad would tell one from that island of his birth. A failed exorcism is part of this parcel of ghostly goodies, a funny one out of Edmonton, and a red-headed ghost in Toronto protects the loot, in a bank, of all appropriate places!
