As the title of this tendentious book suggests, Doctor Morgan contends that people-all of us-grow old sooner than we need and die before we must or indeed should and that we have allowed ourselves to be hypnotized by "calendar age" when what should be measured is individual "body age." Some peoples' bodies remain much "younger" than those of their contemporaries, and Morgan has made it his concern to examine the factors that influence aging and survival. Most of those he isolates are fairly familiar: we are all aware of the importance of heredity, diet, exercise or lack of it, and emotional health; but some other aspects of survival are neglected in North America, such as the continuing involvement in community and family life that keeps the natives of Abkhasia in the Soviet Caucasus Mountains the longest-living people on earth, vigorous at age one hundred and far beyond! There's a lot to think about in Growing Younger, and its author insists that RIGHT NOW is the time you should do that serious thinking. Indexed.
