Volume 12 Number 1 1984 January This, the seventeenth volume in the Grolier Album series, contains useful information about the fur trade in Canada. From fur-bearing animals to trapping and skinning techniques, from fur-trade settlements to the lifestyle of the voyageurs, there is more than enough detail here to support any intermediate-level Canadian history project on the fur trade. Each chapter begins with a short textual introduction to the topic, followed by copious old photographs, drawings, and excerpts from letters and memoirs, all related to the topic. The book does have its faults, however. There is no introduction - for teacher or student - to suggest how the book is intended to be used. (Though there are "For Discovery" questions at the end of each chapter, suggesting that the author sees the book as a teaching, rather than a research, tool.) Occasionally there is an annoying chronological discrepancy between the period or subject covered in the chapter and some of the illustrations. Yet Fur Trade in Canada is a recommended purchase for classrooms and any library called upon to support the research activities of intermediate students. David Remski, Madonna H. S., Downsview, ON.
