Any time books are presented in a series problems arise both for the reviewer or user of the books and for the author or authors.

For the author it must be hard to keep a consistent level of writing and of non-biased approach. A series should be consistent. This one is not. It is geared for the upper elementary level to give stories of "The Canadian men and women. . . (who) were those who not only had a dream but the courage to carry it out." A noble cause and one that is definitely needed at this level for Canadian children. The books on Banting and Best and Bethune are reasonably well written, come to the point, and meet the criteria. The book on Nellie McClung is not well written. It rambles, and if readers did not have more background, they would not have any feeling of the importance of Nellie McClung.

The general format of the books along with the art work is not appealing at all, and at times is quite unattractive.

A problem arises for the teachers and libraries who desperately need materials like what Stories About Canadians proposes to do. Should we be forced to accept work of inferior overall quality just because it is Canadian? The answer is obvious. This series should and would not be acceptable.
