FITNESS FOR THE DISABLED: WHEELCHAIR USERS
Jean Gairdner.
Volume 12 Number 1
This is a special fitness book, one prepared for paraplegics. It explains why they should be particularly aware of the need for physical fitness, emphasizing problems to which the disabled are especially prone such as obesity, skin and bladder infections, pain and stiffness. After receiving a doctor's clearance, disabled persons can have their fitness level tested at one of several Canadian specialized testing centres listed in the resource section of the book, or they can follow instructions to determine their level and to chart its improvement themselves. Three levels of workouts are described and shown in pictures. It is suggested that the people who can handle the top level exercises may want to contact the Canadian Wheelchair Sport Association. Its executive director recommends use of this book. Special sections on dealing with stress, maintaining good eating habits, and handling common athletic injuries round off this discussion of fitness for wheelchair users. The glossary of medical terms, resource guide, and bibliography will prove useful to readers. The author, Jean Gairdner of the Fitness Institute, has written a very helpful, unique book that is recommended to libraries providing information for the disabled.
