The Canadian gardener, both the knowledgeable and the novice, will find The Bradshaw Gardening Guides a very reliable and informative resource. These four titles are the first in a series of sixteen volumes. At $4.95 a volume, the set is expensive, but the advantage lies in the fact that one need purchase only the books that are of particular interest.

John Bradshaw is an internationally-renowned gardening expert with a thirty-two year career in broadcasting and newspaper column writing. His numerous awards and honours are indicative of the respect that members of garden, horticultural, and nursery societies hold for him.

Coloured photos as well as black-and-white drawings adequately illustrate each volume. Their real value, however, lies in the neighbourly, you-can-do-it style of writing as the author describes his favourite varieties of vegetables and flowers. Addresses of seed houses where they may be obtained are listed. Interesting background stories such as "marigold" derived from "Mary's gold" adds to the appeal of these compact paperback reference books. Bradshaw has taken the mysteries out of growing plants of all types and encourages the reader to follow his simple instructions and enjoy success in horticulture.
