This original Canadian novel is one of a continuing series of Jeanpac novels for students in grades 4 to 6. The pocket Fiction sized novels with denim look-alike covers are attractive.

Race Against the Dark is an adventure story about two brothers who are spending the summer on an island not far from Vancouver. Jason, the older brother, is fiercely protective of his slow-learning younger brother Robbie. During the summer Jason helps Robbie to become more independent, and in their final adventure involving smugglers Robbie proves himself. This story is easy to read and fast paced.
