This book was put together by members of the costume committee for the Shelburne bicentennial celebrations of 1983. All those who followed the recent royal tour of Prince Charles and Princess Diana saw in colour the results of the committee's research. Shelburne residents turned out to greet the royal pair in authentic Loyalist costumes, and styles for old and young, men and women, working class and upper class were much in evidence at the colourful ceremonies shown on television. Loyalist Dress in Nova Scotia is illustrated with attractive line drawings by Finn Bower, curator of the Shelburne County Museum, as well as with photographs from museums in Canada, the United States, and England. It will be a useful and interesting book as a reference work for years to come, for it includes some patterns and directions for making Loyalist clothing, along with a list of sources of patterns, fabrics, hats, shoes, fans, and boning. There is a glossary to familiarize readers with such terms as "knop" (a button), 'Dowlas" (a heavy linen, originally from Brittany), "Oznaburg" (a coarse linen from Hanover). A well researched, useful book and one of the many contributions to the bicentennial Loyalist celebrations that have helped to make them an exciting re-enactment of Canadian history. Joan M.
