Units are based on real-life interests of children appropriate for each age level. Children from many racial backgrounds are pictured. Boys and girls are engaged in non-stereotyped activities. The varied living styles across Canada are also represented. Exceptional care has been taken to make the pictures ring true right down to minute details like having dates different on a set of otherwise identical coins. The authors, consultants, and adviser come from various regions in Canada, and their experience in the classroom and in developing curriculum and working with elementary teachers is considerable. Each of the six levels in this series includes a pupil's workbook, a teacher's resource book, testing and practice masters, and problem-solving activities. For levels one and two, the pupil's workbook is large and paperbound, with perforated pages. These books are $5.50. Within each level are units devoted to numeration, arithmetic, geometry, measurement, and graphing. Problem solving is integrated into each of these units. The whole series and each book is well organized and provides the teacher with a wealth of material: pre-tests, mid- and end-of-unit reviews, tests and post-tests, as well as review and extra practice. The teacher's guide is well worth the money; those who wish to integrate language and social science will love the approach, and those who have a core curriculum to follow will benefit from the themes that show that mathematics has relation to everyday living.
