Volume 11 Number 6. 1983 November. Margaret Epp was born in Saskatchewan and received part of her education at the Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills, Alberta. She is the author of several books, including The Earth Is Round.* Hendrick Niessen, son of a Mennonite preacher, came to settle near Rosstown, Saskatchewan, as a young boy of ten in the early 1900s. The novel follows Hendrick as he grows to adulthood rebelling against his family and his God, struggling to finish his education and, finally, trying to persuade his family that he should go to China as a missionary. The story is interesting and effectively develops the characters of Hendrick, his family and their neighbours, creating a realistic view of family and community life. The dialogue, often consisting of broken English and sprinkled with words from the German dialect of the people adds authenticity. A glossary provides translations. Though aimed at adolescent readers, this story would more likely appeal to a somewhat older audience, mainly because the dialect is somewhat difficult to follow. *Reviewed vol.
