Born in Alaska, Georgia is now a Canadian citizen and lives, writes and works in the Canadian Arctic. This impressionistic account, in diary form, covers a year spent in the Arctic. She went on seal and whale hunts, rode in boats, snowmobiles, and dog sleds. She endured, without complaint, much discomfort from frozen toes to frozen houses. The food consumed, often raw and frozen is described with relish. We are given brief but fascinating glimpses into the Inuit lifestyle and mentality. Readers looking for precise information on how things are done will often be baffled. Nevertheless, this is a vivid evocation of life in the far north, dispelling some misconceptions, though whetting the reader's appetite for more detail. The style, sometimes lacking in clarity, suggests a senior high school and public library audience. Must reading for anyone contemplating work or recreation in the Arctic.
