In the 1950s and 60s, major projects in secondary school mathematics curriculum development took place throughout North America and had a global influence. A common element of the "new math" was a more rigorous approach to proof and an extension of the notion into curricular areas other than geometry. Gail Hanna capably reviews these developments, examines the contemporary concepts and use of proof in mathematics, and argues convincingly that rigorous proof ought to be a topic in the mathematics curriculum, rather than its core.

This is an important book for mathematics teachers and curriculum developers.
