Like its predecessors in this series, this volume, edited by Jeffrey Heath, continues to examine Canadian authors through analysis of one work, chronology of their published works and their lives, comments by and about the authors, selected bibliography of primary sources and critical works for each.

Included in this edition are James Reaney, George Ryga, Timothy Findley, Marie-Claire Blais, David French, and Matt Cohen, along with ten other poets, novelists and playwrights.

The series aims "to draw together a diverse and colourful series of introductions to a broad cross-section of Canadian authors," and, judging from this volume (as well as a brief perusal of Volume l),the editor succeeds admirably. The intended audience is one "with intermediate skills," and if we interpret that to mean grades 11 to 13 high school students, again, the editor hits the target. English teachers and students alike should find the book useful as well as enjoyable for its own sake, especially the various authors' comments on their own work and on writing. Tim Findley's comparison says it all: "Dancing and writing are the same. It's a question of defining beauty within a gesture."

The book binding—glued paper in 8V2 x 11 inch size-will not bear up under the constant use the book should get. Re-binding is strongly suggested, as the treatment of Canadian writers given here is not available elsewhere.
