Brian Fawcett recreates brilliantly every boy's childhood, the childhood both of dreams and harsh reality. Every vignette, built around sporting themes, evokes memories of ephemeral triumphs and tragedies, events that seemed so vital at the time but blend into the ebb and flow of life's experiences as one looks back on them from the perspective of reluctant adulthood.

Fawcett uses his poetic sensitivity to bring to life the fluctuating status of a boy's relationships with a dominant father, older siblings, wayward friends, and the civic bureaucracy. As time passes, the problems brought on by puberty and increasing responsibility multiply, and the author realizes, much to his sorrow, that he can no longer escape to the world of games; the real world is too much with him.

Although this book deals with childish matters, it does so from a very adult frame of reference. It is thus recommended for senior students and adults.
