Hosick, formerly a teacher and now a free-lancer, lives in a sugar bush near Parry Sound. In this handbook she takes her reader* through all of the steps involved in making maple syrup from the early planning, which should be done at least a year in advance, to the final product. The last chapter consists of maple syrup recipes. Line drawings, cartoons and black-and-white photos accompany the text on most pages. Each of the seventeen chapters is further subdivided into six or more clearly marked sections. Each chapter ends with a "Points to Remember" summary.

This competently written manual is invaluable for anyone wanting to undertake the taxing and arduous (and romantic?) chore of making maple syrup. The author carefully outlines all the steps in order. Pitfalls and hazards along the way are carefully explained. She approaches her subject with humour and enthusiasm. The diagrams are very clear; the photos, though not all of the best quality, certainly clarify the text. Though there is no index, the detailed table of contents should make most of the information readily accessible.

Students of all ages may use this for school projects, but the book's best audience will be anyone who wishes to undertake the production of maple syrup in whatever amount. Recommended for most libraries.
